I recently got the new MacBook Pro and would like to look after the battery better as I need it for university and would keep it for at least 3 years. I understand that they are lithium-ion batteries and have a recommended max cycle counts of 1, However, would this cause any damage to the computer or not? I also think I read somewhere a few years ago about batteries breaking in just like an engine.

Sounds like a Logic Board issue to me. I put the old battery back in and everything back to normal, thank god no circuitry or motherboard problems. Time to return it, the sensor logic within the battery is not communicating to your system which is why it's not showing it's charging Charging with 0 Watts Don't bother swapping it out again its bad. I doubt you will get it to work I would doubt myself too and it probably won't last long if you perform a miracle and get it to work.
